Courlephobia: Overcoming the Fear of a Clown

Is your child afraid of clowns? Courlephobia, the fear of clowns, is actually a very normal fear for a child to have. Just because your child is afraid doesn't mean that you can't rent one and the child can't love it. It's important to sit down with your child and discuss what he or she is afraid of. It may be that he or she is simply uncomfortable around exuberant, in your face people; if that's the case, there are several clown rentals that allow you to rent a more gentle, discreet one. Perhaps the child fears the distorted features; the white face, the red, bulbous nose, the oversized, floppy shoes. Considering how fearful we humans are, as a race, it's only natural that a child would be frightened when confronted with something as admittedly terrifying and distorted as your typical one. However, it is possible to rent a clown who wears brightly colored clothes, perhaps has flowers painted on his or her face, tells gentle jokes, makes balloon animals, turns somersaults, or just generally entertains the kids, and yet who doesn't have the big shoes or the exaggerated facial expressions or the bulbous nose.

It's important to make allowances for what is, at its heart, a basic fact of human nature. Some people might think that the best way to cure a child of courlephobia is to simply rent the red nosed one and expect them to 'get over it.' Our suggestion is to rent a clown the child can love. Perhaps your clown has just one or two odd features; rainbow colored hair and bright, wacky clothes, for example. If the clown is gentle and pleasant and otherwise lovable, your child will be one step closer to overcoming their fear of clowns. Perhaps at their next party, you might have one with brightly colored hair, wild, wacky clothes--and a big nose, or big feet. If he or she is still gentle, and--most important--not in your face or exaggerated in any way, then the child will still feel relatively comfortable with it, and voila! you're one step closer to overcoming that fear.

Stephen J. Dubner of Freakonomics says getting booed is part of having arrived: "If you’ve made the big time -- if you’re a professional -- well then boos kind of come with the territory. If you aren’t getting booed -- well, you probably haven’t gotten where you want to go. Nobody boos a bad clown at a kids’ birthday party, do they?" John C.
